Health they say is wealth, so it follows that the wealth of a nation lies in the health of its citizens. One key element in sustaining good health is regular health checks. This however does not come cheap and can be time consuming and sadly, not a lot people can afford the time or money. It is out of this necessity that the medical fair initiative was born. The program which is powered by Covenant Christian Centre - a Lagos based Church Pastored by 'Poju Oyemade aims to provide a broad range of medical services to the public free of charge.
This year, Saturday, the 11th of February witnessed the tremendous success of the medical fair which is now in its third year running. The venue of the program, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos played host to thousands of people, all seeking to take advantage of the free medical services being offered. The magnitude of the crowd and their eager anticipation is an attestation to the remarkable nature of the initiative. Some of the medical units on hand to offer their services were obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, medical laboratory, pharmacy and so much more. A few corporate bodies like Milo also came on board to offer some of their products for free.
At the time of going to press, it was noted that about 1300 medicated glasses were given out for free at the fair and nearly a thousand people had their blood test done. Information is still being collated from all medical units concerning their achievements at the fair, but suffice it to say that the objective of the program was met as everyone who attended benefited from it. The success accorded to the fair further buttresses the need for the church to take up an active role in shaping the society by looking for a need in their immediate environment (you don't need to go on a grand scale) and making efforts to meet that need. Personally, I look forward to more initiatives like these.
